Lanzarote energy blackout disrupts water supply and electricity

A major energy blackout in Lanzarote and La Graciosa has disrupted electricity and water services for approximately 73,600 customers. The incident began around 05:44 on Saturday at the Mácher substation in Tías, initially affecting 51,703 clients before a second incident during recovery efforts expanded the outage.

While electrical supply has been largely restored, the blackout caused the shutdown of several desalination plants. Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa reported that while production is resuming, water levels in main storage reservoirs must be replenished before full service can be normalized. Residents may experience pressure drops or temporary cuts as the system stabilizes.

The Canary Islands government has declared a pre-alert status through the PLATECA civil protection plan and is investigating the causes of the failure, stating they will seek accountability from the grid operators.
