Coastal erosion threatens southeastern France's Var region
Coastal erosion is increasingly threatening the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. In the Var department, 19 out of 27 communes are affected by shoreline retreat. Experts from the Regional Council of the Order of Architects (Croa Paca) estimate that approximately 433 homes in the department could be at risk by 2050.
In Hyères-les-Palmiers, the Almanarre beach and the coastal strip connecting to the Giens peninsula are facing significant threats from winter storms and rising sea levels. The Toulon Provence Méditerranée (TPM) metropolis currently spends between 400,000 and 500,000 euros annually to artificially replenish sand to protect local salt marshes and biodiversity. While a project for a 400-meter underwater dike has been proposed, environmental authorities have recommended studying scenarios that involve no human intervention.
Discussions regarding long-term solutions emphasize the need for multi-decade planning and tactical urbanism. Architects suggest experimenting with temporary land-use changes to observe patterns before implementing permanent infrastructure to protect economic activities and residential areas.
