Coastal erosion in southeastern France

Overview

Coastal erosion is increasingly threatening the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. In the Var department, 19 out of 27 communes are affected by shoreline retreat, with experts estimating that approximately 433 homes could be at risk by 2050. In areas like Hyères-les-Palmiers, winter storms and rising sea levels threaten beaches and coastal strips, leading to annual expenditures for sand replenishment to protect biodiversity.

In response to these threats, coastal reinforcement and protection projects have commenced or resumed in several southern locations. In Gigaro, rehabilitation of a sea wall is underway to protect the promenade, with efforts focusing on restoring natural sediment movement. In Menton, works targeting the Hawaii beach and Sablettes zones involve structural changes, such as replacing pontoons and adjusting beach tenons, to improve the natural circulation of water and sediment.
