Global families face rising costs for 2026-2027 school year

As the 2026-2027 school year approaches, families in Spain, Mexico, and Cuba are facing significant economic pressures due to rising costs for school supplies, uniforms, and fees.

In Spain, reports from the Observatorio Cetelem indicate varying regional impacts. In Galicia, families expect to spend an average of 500 euros per child, a 31% increase from 2025. In Castilla-La Mancha, the average is 508 euros, while in Palencia, costs could reach 1,056 euros per child. Nationally, the basic school basket is approximately 19% more expensive than in 2022.

In Mexico, the economic burden is substantial. Estimates suggest an average expenditure of approximately 12,422 pesos per student, a 13.8% increase from the previous year. The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has released official lists of suggested materials to guide families, emphasizing that schools cannot mandate specific brands. Additionally, authorities have warned of increased digital fraud targeting parents during this shopping season.

In Cuba, Education Minister Naima Trujillo noted that the upcoming school year will be complex due to the country's current energy and economic situation. Efforts are being made to decentralize resources and ensure educational continuity despite these challenges.
