Global back-to-school economic pressures

Overview

As the 2026-2027 academic year approaches, families globally are navigating rising costs and logistical shifts.

In Mexico, inflation has driven notebook prices up by 4.6% and textbooks by 3.5%. To assist parents, the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has released suggested lists of basic materials, while Profeco has published studies identifying high-quality supplies. In Tamaulipas, the average cost per student is estimated at approximately 12,422 pesos, a 13.8% increase from the previous year. Total costs per student, including uniforms and technology, are estimated between 2,000 and over 15,000 MXN. Logistics providers have reported a 36% increase in shipments for school-related goods.

Spain continues to see high expenditures, with an average of 2,390 euros per child driving a surge in the second-hand market. In Castilla y León, average spending rose 23% to 514 euros, while Castilla-La Mancha averages 508 euros, representing a 90% increase compared to 2025. In Extremadura, costs for supplies, uniforms, and books can equal nearly a full monthly salary for some households. Consequently, FREAMPA has called for more stable textbook requirements, urging teachers to reuse materials and avoid unnecessary changes in publishers to mitigate the financial burden.

In Canada, families are projected to spend between $600 and $750 per child. While spending remains stable, 91% of parents report rising costs, and 85% are actively seeking bargains. In France, the back-to-school allowance (ARS) disbursement is scheduled for August 18, 2026, for mainland France. In the Dominican Republic, over 2 million students prepare for an August 24 return despite a 28,000-classroom deficit. In Venezuela, the Fe y Alegría movement’s ‘Escuelas Abiertas’ program provides support following recent seismic activity.
