Cochin Shipyard begins construction of first Next Generation Missile Vessel

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced the construction of the first Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) for the Indian Navy. The keel-laying ceremony took place in Kochi, marking a significant milestone for the shipyard as it enters the production of advanced, weapon-intensive defense platforms.

Under a contract signed in March 2023, CSL is tasked with building six NGMVs. These high-speed vessels are designed to provide offensive capabilities against enemy warships, land targets, and merchant vessels. They will be equipped with sophisticated technology, including surface-to-surface missile systems, anti-missile defense systems, air surveillance radars, and fire control radars.

The project emphasizes indigenous development, with major role-defining equipment being manufactured domestically. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ programs, aiming to enhance the Navy’s combat readiness and maritime strike capabilities within the Indian Ocean Region.
