Indian Navy Next Generation Missile Vessel construction

Overview

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced construction of the first Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) for the Indian Navy. The keel-laying ceremony in Kochi marks the start of a contract to build six high-speed, 1,500-ton vessels intended to replace the aging Veer-class missile boats.

These vessels are designed for offensive operations against warships, land targets, and merchant vessels. Technical specifications include the integration of four BrahMos anti-ship cruise missiles, the VL-SRSAM missile system, and a multi-function X-band radar from Bharat Electronics Limited. Propulsion will be provided by GE Aerospace LM2500 gas turbines and Kamewa waterjet systems.

The project focuses on indigenous development under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, with delivery to the Indian Navy expected to begin in early 2027.
