Cocoa industry faces strikes and new international agreement
The global cocoa sector is undergoing significant structural changes. The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) has announced that the 2026 International Cocoa Agreement will officially enter into force on October 1, 2026. In Côte d’Ivoire, the implementation of a new National Traceability System (SNT) is underway to meet European deforestation regulations. Between September 7 and 13, 2026, 26,000 tonnes of beans were recorded through the system, with 38,000 producers utilizing a new mandatory, chip-enabled producer card for transactions.
However, the industry faces internal unrest. The National Agricultural Union for Progress in Côte d’Ivoire (SYNAP-CI) has declared an unlimited strike. The union is protesting the 1,200 FCFA/kg farm gate price and demanding the resignation of Koné Brahima Yves, the Director General of the Conseil Café-Cacao, citing concerns over stock management and governance.
