Overview

Cocoa producers in West Africa face mounting economic and environmental pressures. While global prices have entered a six-month upward trend—rising 25.5% last month to $6,771 per ton due to supply stability concerns—farmers are seeing little of these gains.

In Ghana, the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) highlighted a massive discrepancy in revenue distribution. Despite export earnings nearly doubling to US$3.86 billion in 2025 and a 32.4% rise in average realized prices, the farm-gate price remained stagnant at GH₵2,500 per bag. Researchers estimate farmers should have received between GH₵4,104 and GH₵4,634 per bag, leaving a gap of up to GH₵2,100 per bag.

In Côte d’Ivoire, the farm-gate price remains at 1,200 FCFA per kilogram. Critics like Ahoua Don Mello argue the current model is obsolete, noting that while the country produces 40% of global cocoa, it captures only 6% of the global value added. To address this, stakeholders are advocating for structural reforms and increased local processing. Supporting this shift, the Dutch development bank FMO provided a 20 million euro facility to Ivory Cocoa Products to bolster local transformation into semi-finished goods.

Environmental factors continue to threaten yields. The El Niño phenomenon is expected to intensify Harmattan winds and record temperatures, stressing trees. These conditions, alongside slow crop development, have led analysts to lower previous surplus projections and warn of a potential supply deficit if demand in Asia strengthens.
