Cocoa producers in Ivory Coast and Ghana warn of rising substitutes

The Ivory Coast-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (ICCIG) has raised concerns regarding the increasing use of cocoa substitutes and industrial reformulations that reduce the proportion of cocoa beans in chocolate products. The ICCIG noted that this trend occurs while producers face rising costs to comply with global sustainability and traceability standards.

In a recent meeting, leaders from Ivory Coast and Ghana reaffirmed their commitment to building a sustainable cocoa economy, focusing on better remuneration for farmers and equitable value distribution. Discussions also addressed harmonizing marketing policies, combating cocoa tree diseases, and implementing the ARS 1000 standard.

Separately, agricultural organizations in Ivory Coast are calling for greater transparency regarding a government initiative to repurchase 100,000 tonnes of cocoa. Professional organizations are requesting the publication of detailed lists, including the cooperatives involved, the volumes inventoried, and the specific quantities actually collected, to ensure fair distribution and prevent speculation.
