Chile is facing a complex period in its mining sector as major producers adjust their output expectations despite record-high copper prices. The state-owned miner Codelco has abandoned its production targets for 2026, citing operational and geological challenges. Under new leadership, Codelco is shifting its focus toward profitability and debt management to address a record debt of approximately US$ 27 billion, rather than pursuing high volume targets. Additionally, BHP has overtaken Codelco as the world's largest copper supplier.

Escondida, the world's largest mine, has also lowered its projections, expecting production to decline from 1.3 million tons in 2025 to between 1 and 1.1 million tons by 2027. Experts attribute these declines to lower ore grades, deeper mining pits, and increasing processing complexities.

In response to these challenges, the Chilean government is implementing structural reforms to revitalize the industry. Measures include reducing the corporate tax rate from 27% to 23% under the National Reconstruction Law and introducing the Framework Law on Sectoral Authorizations to reduce project processing times by up to 70%. The government has also launched a consultative group to boost exploration and aims to reach a national production goal of six million tons of copper through increased productivity and legal certainty.
