Cody Gakpo to play for Netherlands despite miscarriage loss
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and his partner Noa van der Bij announced on Instagram that their unborn son, named Elijah Raphael, died during the pregnancy. The family shared a heartfelt message thanking supporters and asked for privacy.
Despite the tragedy, the Dutch national team kept Gakpo in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage. Coach Ronald Koeman said Gakpo is ready to play and that the staff had offered compassionate leave, which the striker declined. Captain Virgil van Dijk praised Gakpo’s maturity and the team’s support. The Netherlands are set to face Morocco in the round of 16 in Monterrey, Mexico, with Gakpo expected to start.
