Koeman resigns, Dutch fallout and Summerville transfer
Overview
The Netherlands’ 2026 World Cup exit triggered a wave of racist abuse that prompted the KNVB to open a criminal‑action pathway and launch an online reporting portal. Coach Ronald Koeman stepped down on 1 July, citing his wife’s breast‑cancer diagnosis, and the federation has narrowed its search for a successor to Arne Slot, Peter Bosz, Michael Reiziger and Erik ten Hag. Sports Minister Mirjam Sterk and Prime Minister Rob Jetten condemned the abuse and pledged a zero‑tolerance stance.
Winger Crysencio Summerville, one of the abused players, became a transfer focal point after West Ham United’s relegation. West Ham cut his asking price from about £70 million to £40 million, and Premier League clubs—including Manchester United, Fulham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham—have been linked to a £35‑50 million deal. Manchester United identified Summerville as a primary target should Marcus Rashford leave, estimating a £30 million fee to free up Rashford’s £17.5 million‑a‑year wages. Roma submitted a €45 million offer and Aston Villa continued monitoring the player.
On 15 July United reiterated interest, while rumours of Rashford moving to Fenerbahçe were dismissed. On 18 July the Dutch squad received the FIFA Fair Play Award despite a round‑of‑16 loss to Morocco.
In a new development, United have opened formal enquiries for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr, a 28‑year‑old Senegal international who scored 21 goals in 2025‑26. Sarr, who calls United his “only dream club”, is under a three‑year contract; Palace are expected to demand a fee above his £34‑50 million market value. United view him as depth‑adding, especially with the anticipated departures of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
The KNVB continues its legal and disciplinary response while Dutch football watches the coaching vacancy and the future of its international players.
