Coffee consumption linked to lower body fat and higher muscle mass

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Oulu, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, has identified an association between regular coffee consumption and improved body composition. Analyzing data from 2,264 adults from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, researchers found that higher coffee intake is linked to lower levels of total and visceral fat, as well as higher skeletal muscle mass, even among individuals with similar Body Mass Indices (BMI).

In men, the associations were more pronounced, correlating with more favorable glucose-insulin profiles and higher levels of total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). In women, the effects were more subtle, primarily involving increased SHBG and decreased free androgens. The study also noted lower levels of certain amino acids linked to insulin resistance.

Lead author Luca Verroest noted that while millions drink coffee daily, much is still unknown about its interaction with metabolism and hormones. Researchers emphasized that the study identifies associations rather than direct causation, and further animal model studies are planned to investigate potential causal relationships.
