Coffee consumption linked to lower body fat and higher muscle mass
New research suggests a link between coffee consumption and improved body composition. An observational study of 2,264 individuals from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, found that regular coffee drinkers tended to have lower levels of total and visceral fat despite having similar BMIs to non-drinkers. These individuals also exhibited higher muscle mass.
Additionally, studies on green coffee—unroasted beans containing higher levels of chlorogenic acids—have shown potential for weight management. A meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials indicated an average body weight reduction of approximately 1.2 kg and a slight decrease in BMI. Another study published in Nutrients found that consuming 180 ml of coffee rich in chlorogenic acids daily for 12 weeks resulted in a significantly greater reduction in visceral fat area compared to a control group. However, researchers note that many of these studies are small or short-term, requiring further investigation.
