Coffee consumption linked to metabolic health and minimal bone impact
Recent scientific research provides insights into how coffee and tea consumption affect bone health and metabolic composition. Regarding bone density, studies indicate that caffeine and theine have a very modest impact on calcium absorption. While caffeine can slightly increase calcium excretion through urine and marginally reduce intestinal absorption, the loss is estimated at only two to three milligrams per cup. For individuals consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine daily—roughly three to four espressos—the effect is considered negligible if dietary calcium intake is sufficient.
Separately, a study from the University of Oulu in Finland, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, suggests that higher coffee consumption is linked to healthier body compositions. Researchers analyzed data from 2,264 individuals and found that those with higher consumption levels tended to have less total and abdominal fat and more muscle mass, even when controlling for Body Mass Index (BMI). The study also noted associations with improved metabolic markers and distinct hormonal patterns in men and women, potentially offering protection against insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
