Coffee consumption: The role of salt in flavor and health

Adding a small amount of salt, such as one or two grains, to coffee is a practice used to alter taste perception. According to Science-et-vie, coffee contains bitter compounds that vary based on bean type, roast level, and brewing method. A tiny amount of salt can suppress the prominence of bitterness, making the coffee taste smoother and allowing other flavor layers to become more apparent.

Regarding health, coffee can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation. Large-scale observational studies and meta-analyses, including a 2026 update involving over 2.8 million people, have noted associations between coffee consumption and a lower risk of certain health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. However, these findings indicate a correlation rather than a direct preventative effect, and experts emphasize that moderation is key to avoiding potential health risks.
