Coffee prices rise across Italy amid inflation and energy costs

Coffee prices in Italy are rising, with the average price per cup reaching 1.29 euros this year, a 25-cent increase compared to 2021. In certain locations, such as central Merano and parts of Bologna, prices have reached 1.70 to 2 euros per cup.

Regional disparities are significant. Bolzano is identified as the most expensive city with an average of 1.51 euros, while Messina remains the most affordable at 1.06 euros. A 45-cent gap exists between northern and southern regions.

Lino Enrico Stoppani, president of Fipe, stated that while a 2-euro cup is a remote possibility, operators are facing pressure from inflation and energy costs. He noted that while raw coffee commodity prices have doubled on the New York exchange, the primary drivers for price hikes are the operational costs of public establishments, including rent and energy, rather than the coffee beans themselves.
