Economic trends and rising espresso prices in Italy
Overview
The Italian coffee market is experiencing significant price shifts as the national average for an espresso has risen to 1.29 euros, a 24.2% increase since 2021. While regional disparities persist, a notable 45-cent gap has emerged between northern and southern regions.
Bolzano remains the most expensive city at 1.51 euros, with specific areas in Merano and Bologna seeing prices reach between 1.70 and 2 euros. In Lombardy, Mantova records a high average of 1.37 euros, while Milan sits at 1.27 euros. Conversely, Messina remains among the most affordable at 1.06 euros. Significant five-year hikes were previously noted in Pescara (+49%), Parma (+41%), Bari (+39.5%), and Naples (+37.8%).
Industry experts emphasize that these increases are not driven solely by raw coffee commodity prices. Although coffee prices have doubled on the New York exchange, Furio Truzzi of the CRC and Lino Enrico Stoppani, president of Fipe, indicate that rising energy, rent, and general management costs for bar operators are the primary drivers being passed to consumers. Stoppani noted that while a 2-euro cup is a ‘remote possibility’, operators face intense pressure from inflation.
Despite these trends, some establishments maintain historic pricing. In Cossato, the owners of Café Fante di Cuori have kept their espresso at 0.70 euros—the direct conversion of 1,500 Italian Lire—since 1999, describing it as a ‘political price’ to support local workers.
