Coffee prices rise as Arabica costs surge

Rising costs for Arabica coffee and energy are impacting the hospitality sector, though consumer prices for espresso have not risen as sharply as raw material costs. Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè, noted that while the price of Arabica coffee increased by 80% since 2021, the average price of a cup of coffee rose by only 24% during the same period. A mathematical simulation suggests that if coffee prices had tracked the Arabica increase exactly, a cup currently costing 1.30 euro would cost 1.89 euro.

In Cagliari, the average price for an espresso reached 1.52 euro in late 2025. However, Fipe Confcommercio Sud Sardegna emphasized that while coffee price hikes are notable, the primary drivers of eroded purchasing power are essential expenses. Between 2020 and 2026, food prices rose by over 30%, and housing and energy costs increased by more than 70%. Bar operators face similar pressures, as rising utility bills and logistical costs due to the international geopolitical scenario impact their operational budgets.
