Global coffee price volatility and supply pressures
Overview
Global coffee prices are facing significant upward pressure driven by regulatory changes and environmental factors. A report from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre warns that strict new EU pesticide regulations could cause prices to surge by as much as 332% if non-EU producers fail to comply.
Supply risks have intensified due to weather-related disruptions. In Brazil, heavy rainfall has threatened bean quality, while droughts, heat, and unpredictable rainfall in both Brazil and Vietnam have shrunk global supply. These climate issues, alongside rising transport and energy costs, are impacting retail markets. In the Netherlands, market leader Douwe Egberts (under JDE Peet’s) has implemented price increases exceeding 20 percent, with some beans costing supermarkets over 21 euros per kilogram. While retailers like Albert Heijn and Jumbo have resisted manufacturer demands, costs are increasingly being passed to consumers.
In Vietnam, the market remains volatile. Domestic prices in the Central Highlands have fluctuated, recently ranging between 96,500 and 97,200 VND/kg following downward trends in Robusta London contracts. Despite this, Vietnam’s export outlook is positive; data from the first seven months of 2026 shows an export volume of 1.2 million tons, a 10.4% increase over the previous year, even as total value decreased by 11.2% due to lower average prices. The EU remains Vietnam’s largest market at 40.6% of export value, though exports to the United States have seen significant volume growth.
To meet demand, Nestlé Vietnam has commissioned a new, highly automated instant coffee packaging line at its Trị An plant, capable of producing over 350,000 jars per day for domestic and international markets.
