Cognizant launches Physical AI platform for manufacturing

The manufacturing sector is seeing a shift toward Physical AI, a technology designed to move artificial intelligence beyond simple data analysis and into real-time physical operations. Cognizant has launched a sovereign Physical AI platform-as-a-service intended to connect sensors, robotics, and factory automation through a unified intelligence layer. Unlike conventional industrial AI that primarily predicts faults or recommends actions, Physical AI enables machines to interpret their surroundings and take authorized corrective actions within safety boundaries.

This technological evolution addresses critical bottlenecks in manufacturing, particularly the slow process of converting engineering knowledge into actionable work instructions. Current methods often rely on manual documentation that can take weeks to produce, a process that struggles to keep pace with engineering changes. Furthermore, the industry faces a significant labor challenge, with projections suggesting a need for up to 3.8 million new employees by 2033, many of whom may remain unfilled as experienced workers retire and take institutional knowledge with them.
