Microsoft and Mistral expand European sovereign AI partnership
Microsoft and the French AI firm Mistral have deepened their alliance to deliver "sovereign" artificial‑intelligence solutions across Europe. The agreement integrates Mistral’s frontier language models into Microsoft’s cloud portfolio, including Azure, Azure Local, Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio, allowing enterprises to run AI workloads in public, hybrid or fully isolated environments while keeping data under local control.
To support the initiative, Microsoft will rent compute capacity at Mistral sites in France and Sweden and deploy new GPU clusters for model training and inference. The partnership targets regulated sectors such as finance, health and manufacturing that require strict data residency, operational continuity and compliance with European AI regulations. Microsoft plans to invest several billion dollars and deploy thousands of Nvidia GPUs, while Mistral will continue to develop its models and expand its European computing infrastructure.
