Coimbatore leads Tamil Nadu in GPS installation for mineral transport trucks

Coimbatore has become the leading district in Tamil Nadu for the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices on trucks transporting mineral resources. Out of approximately 7,000 trucks operating in the district, 4,200 have been equipped with tracking technology, representing about 60 per cent compliance.

The state government mandated GPS installation to monitor the movement of materials such as stone aggregates, gravel, and red soil to curb illegal transportation. This is particularly critical in Coimbatore due to its location along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, which serves as a major transit point for minerals entering Kerala. Authorities have established 13 check-posts along this border to strengthen enforcement.

Coordinated efforts involve the Department of Geology and Mining, the Revenue Department, and local police. The state has set an October 31 deadline for all mineral transport vehicles to comply, warning that legal action will be taken against those that fail to meet the requirement. While some other districts have higher numbers of mineral trucks, Coimbatore currently leads in the rate of installation.
