Tamil Nadu mineral transport regulation

Overview

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated a digital overhaul to regulate the transportation of sand and other minerals, aiming to curb illegal extraction and the use of forged permits. The strategy involves the implementation of a QR-coded online permit system via the Mineral Management System (MIMAS) portal to replace manual documentation.

To support this oversight, the state has mandated the installation of GPS devices on mineral-carrying trucks to track journeys. As of mid-October, Coimbatore has emerged as a leader in compliance, with approximately 60 per cent of the district’s 7,000 mineral transport trucks having installed the technology. This is considered particularly vital in Coimbatore due to its role as a transit point for minerals moving toward the Kerala border.

Authorities have set an October 31 deadline for full GPS compliance and are utilizing check-posts, weighbridge integration, and coordinated departmental efforts to monitor shipments and ensure royalty and tax collections.
