Coimbra expands metrobus system, altering traffic and transit
The expansion of the metrobus system in Coimbra to Coimbra-B and Praça da República is triggering significant changes to urban traffic and public transport networks. The reconfiguration affects more than 20 SMTUC bus lines, with officials estimating that 14% of daily passengers will be impacted by the network changes.
In the Baixa area, traffic restrictions include making Rua da Sofia a one-way street reserved for public transport and local access. Avenida D. Sesnando Davides will also have restricted access, and Rua da Saragoça will operate in a single descending direction.
Access to the Mercado Municipal D. Pedro V parking facilities is also being modified. Drivers coming from Casa do Sal or Portagem must follow new routes via Rua de Aveiro and Rua de Saragoça. Parking lots P1 and P2 are accessible via Rua de Montarroio, while P3 is accessible via Manutenção Militar and Rua da Fonte Nova. The municipality has launched a clarification campaign to assist residents and motorists during this transition.
