Coimbra to overhaul downtown traffic for Metrobus launch

Significant changes to traffic and public transport are expected in downtown Coimbra starting in September with the launch of the central section of the Mondego Mobility System (SMM) Metrobus. The Coimbra City Council has approved a new organization for traffic and the routes of the Coimbra Municipal Urban Transport Services (SMTUC).

One major change involves Rua da Sofia, which will restrict general automobile traffic to prioritize public transport, residents, and essential services. This measure aims to reduce traffic pressure and improve pedestrian conditions. SMTUC buses will continue to use Rua Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes and Rua da Sofia in the direction of Praça da República–Avenida Fernão de Magalhães, while the reverse direction will utilize Avenida D. Sesnando Davides and Rua Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes.
