Coinbase launches regulated crypto derivatives in Canada

Coinbase has launched regulated crypto derivatives trading in Canada, marking itself as the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct native crypto futures in the region. The service is provided through Coinbase Financial Markets, a futures commission merchant registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

The offering includes 23 crypto perpetual and dated futures contracts tied to assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana. Additionally, the lineup features five commodity futures linked to gold, silver, and oil, as well as index futures like the COIN50. The contracts utilize nano-sized positions and allow for leverage of up to 10x.

Access is restricted to eligible sophisticated investors, including those with at least $5 million in net financial assets or registered investment advisers and dealers. This expansion follows a trend of U.S.-based platforms increasing their presence in the Canadian market.

Separately, Coinbase has submitted a registration notice to the U.S. SEC to potentially launch single-stock perpetual contracts in the United States. This move aims to bring 24/7 equity-linked perpetual instruments, typically found in crypto markets, to traditional stock trading.
