Coinbase launches tokenized U.S. stocks on Base blockchain

Coinbase has launched tokenized versions of four major U.S. technology stocks—Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet—on its Base blockchain. These assets, issued under the B20 token standard, allow eligible investors outside the United States to gain exposure to the underlying equities through self-custodial wallets.

The tokens are backed in a 1:1 ratio by actual shares held by Alpaca Securities, an SEC-registered broker-dealer, within a segregated custody structure regulated by the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). This framework ensures that the assets are bankruptcy-remote from Coinbase.

To facilitate integration with decentralized finance (DeFi), Coinbase has partnered with Chainlink to provide continuous, real-time pricing data via Data Feeds. This enables the tokenized stocks to be used as collateral in lending protocols such as Aave, Morpho, and Euler, and to be traded on decentralized exchanges like Aerodrome. Unlike synthetic derivatives, these B20 tokens represent a direct beneficial interest in the underlying shares, with corporate actions like dividends and stock splits automatically accounted for through a Coinbase-supplied multiplier.
