Expansion of tokenized US stock markets

Overview

The market for tokenized US equities has seen significant infrastructure development and expansion. Initially, the broker-dealer Alpaca emerged as a dominant player, controlling approximately 94% of the on-chain market by rostering over $1.5 billion in shares backing tokenized stocks and ETFs.

Following this concentration of custody, Coinbase expanded the ecosystem by launching tokenized versions of major US stocks on its Base blockchain. These assets, issued as B20 tokens, provide a 1:1 beneficial interest in underlying shares and are designed for use in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. To support this, Coinbase integrated Chainlink Data Feeds for real-time pricing and utilized Alpaca Securities for regulated custody under the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) framework, ensuring the assets remain bankruptcy-remote.

In a recent expansion of this offering, Coinbase launched tokenized versions of four major US technology stocks—Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet—on the Base blockchain. These B20 tokens allow eligible investors outside the United States to gain exposure to the underlying equities through self-custodial wallets. The tokens are backed 1:1 by shares held by Alpaca Securities in a segregated custody structure. To facilitate DeFi integration, the partnership with Chainlink enables these assets to be used as collateral in lending protocols such as Aave, Morpho, and Euler, or traded on decentralized exchanges like Aerodrome. Corporate actions, including dividends and stock splits, are automatically accounted for via a Coinbase-supplied multiplier.
