Coinbase Vice Chair Declares End of Crypto Regulatory Wars

Coinbase appointed Ryan VanGrack as its first Vice Chair and head of corporate affairs on July 9 2026. VanGrack announced that the era of courtroom battles over digital assets has ended, calling the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) a piece of legislation with "tremendous momentum" and bipartisan Senate support. The Act is designed to draw clear jurisdictional lines between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for digital assets, aiming to provide investor protection and solidify U.S. leadership.

The announcement follows the departure of former Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal, who stepped down on July 31 2026 after overseeing the dismissal of a major SEC lawsuit filed in June 2023. VanGrack, a former SEC official and Citadel Securities executive, is positioned as a “peacetime diplomat,” shifting Coinbase’s focus from litigation to growth. Under his guidance, Coinbase is expanding beyond cryptocurrency exchange services into equities trading, futures, prediction markets, and AI tools, seeking to become a full‑spectrum financial services platform.
