Coinbase regulatory shift 2026
Entities: Coinbase Global, Inc. · U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) · Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) · Ryan VanGrack · Paul Grewal
Overview
In July 2026 Coinbase announced that Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal would depart, ending his tenure that saw the firm defend against a major SEC lawsuit filed in June 2023. Shortly afterward, the exchange named Ryan VanGrack as its first Vice Chair and head of corporate affairs. VanGrack, a former SEC official, declared an end to the “courtroom battles” over digital assets and promoted the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) as legislation with strong bipartisan support that would delineate SEC and CFTC jurisdiction. Under his guidance Coinbase is moving from a litigation‑focused strategy to broader growth, expanding into equities, futures, prediction markets and AI tools as it seeks to become a full‑spectrum financial services platform.
