Cointzio Dam release in Michoacán proceeds without risk to nearby residents

Mexico's National Water Commission (Conagua), through its Michoacán delegation, began a controlled release from the Cointzio Dam on 7 July 2026. The operation was triggered by a rapid rise in water storage after recent rains, reaching 68.5 hectometres cubed. To lower the level to 49.56 hm³, officials will release five cubic metres per second via the dam's outlet, directing the flow into the Rio Grande. Conagua representative Luis Roberto Arias Reyes said the release “does not represent any risk to the citizenry.”

The release is coordinated with the State Water and Basin Management Commission (Ceac), led by Olivia Cazarez Arreola, and aims to prevent flooding while maintaining water supply for agriculture and urban areas. Residents of the municipalities of Morelia, Cuitzeo, Tarímbaro, Charo, Álvaro Obregón, Zinapécuaro, Indaparapeo and Queréndaro were assured of safety.

The minimal water volume released is not expected to affect river levels downstream, and the operation is intended to keep the dam at an optimal level for future use.
