Brazil weekend weather shift: cold eases, rain hits South

A polar cold front that produced several days of extreme low temperatures and widespread frost in the Serra Catarinense has begun to retreat. Record negatives were reported in municipalities such as Bom Jardim da Serra (-9 °C) and Lages, with the city council issuing a special "atestado de banho" to allow absences for vulnerable residents. The executive secretary of Civil Protection, Paulo da Silva Ribeiro, warned that “as madrugadas ainda exigem atenção especial, principalmente nas áreas mais suscetíveis à formação de geada e de gelo.”

With the front moving eastward, temperatures are rising in São Paulo and much of the Southeast, where daytime highs are expected to reach the mid‑20s °C. However, a new cold mass will approach early next week, bringing renewed risk of rain, strong winds and isolated flooding in Santa Catarina and the southern states. The Defesa Civil of Santa Catarina has issued an alert for heavy rain and possible floods this weekend, especially in the South Coast and Alto Vale do Itajaí.

Meanwhile, central Brazil is experiencing very dry air, with relative humidity falling below 20 % in parts of Goiás, Tocantins and the western Bahia region. The northern state of Acre sees a stable, rain‑free day with mild temperatures. The overall outlook points to a brief warm‑up followed by another cold spell and rain in the South, while the interior remains dry and hot.
