Extreme weather impacts Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Argentina

Multiple regions in the Americas are facing extreme weather conditions. In Mexico, atmospheric instability driven by the Mexican monsoon and tropical wave number 29 is causing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Intense precipitation is specifically forecast for Guerrero and Oaxaca, while Jalisco faces high risks of intense rain. Additionally, a heatwave is affecting northern Mexico and the Pacific/Gulf coasts, with temperatures in northeast Baja California expected to reach or exceed 45 degrees Celsius.

In the Dominican Republic, the Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (INDOMET) has warned of extreme heat in several northwestern and southwestern provinces, with temperatures reaching 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. The heat is attributed to seasonal patterns, El Niño effects, and Saharan dust concentrations.

In Argentina, meteorological models indicate a near 100% probability that El Niño conditions will persist through the September 2026 quarter, potentially intensifying the traditional Santa Rosa storms. Meanwhile, in Neuquén, winter conditions persist with low temperatures near freezing in several localities.
