Extreme heat and heavy rain across the Americas and Europe

Overview

Extreme weather conditions continue to impact multiple regions across the Americas and Europe. In Mexico, the monsoon season persists, bringing heavy rains and electrical storms to states such as Sinaloa and Sonora. Sonora remains under significant pressure as Hermosillo experiences temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. Researcher Carmen Isela Ortega Rosas noted that Hermosillo is among the world’s hottest cities, where heat islands and dust contribute to respiratory illnesses.

In the United States, Los Angeles is reporting high temperatures with maximums reaching 36 degrees Celsius. In Argentina, conditions in Añatuya are characterized by cloudy and cool temperatures between 11 and 15 degrees Celsius, though temperatures are expected to rise later in the week. In Chile, San Pedro de Atacama remains stable with clear skies and moderate temperatures.

In Spain, meteorological instability is intensifying due to an Atlantic low-pressure system, creating a sharp contrast between extreme heat and severe storms. While parts of the Mediterranean coast and the southeast, including Alicante and Murcia, continue to experience high temperatures between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius, other regions face significant shifts.

In the Valencia coast, temperatures reaching up to 36 °C have triggered yellow alerts and extreme wildfire risks due to dry winds. The Balearic Islands face instability with potential thunderstorms, hail, and wind gusts exceeding 70 km/h. In the interior and northern regions, including Aragon, Castile and León, and parts of Andalusia, alerts have been issued for heavy rainfall. Specifically, parts of Huesca and Teruel face orange alerts for storms and rain, while Zamora and Sanabria remain under yellow alerts for wind and precipitation. Meanwhile, Galicia and Cádiz are seeing the arrival of Atlantic low-pressure systems bringing rain and thermal relief.
