College football preseason rankings spark debate over accuracy
The release of preseason college football rankings has sparked debate regarding their accuracy and utility. SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee criticized the practice, arguing that preseason lists are arbitrary because they rely on roster makeups and spring games rather than actual on-field data. He noted that without games played, it is impossible to accurately measure strength of schedule or performance.
In contrast, ESPN’s Bill Connelly defended projection systems like SP+, stating that these models use returning production and recruiting rankings to create reasonably accurate pictures of upcoming seasons. Connelly noted that such systems have successfully projected regular-season records for top-ranked teams in previous years.
Recent polls have also highlighted perceived disrespect toward certain programs. The AP preseason poll placed Texas at No. 5, notably lacking first-place votes compared to teams like Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana. Meanwhile, Alabama received a preseason ranking of No. 13, its lowest since 2008, as the program transitions under new head coach Kalen DeBoer.
