Collserola forest fires spark safety concerns in Barcelona

Recent forest fires in the Collserola Natural Park have sparked intense debate regarding wildfire prevention and management in the Barcelona metropolitan area. Two significant fires occurred within eleven days, affecting approximately 65 hectares of the mountain range, including a recent blaze in the Canyelles and Torre Baró areas that forced the evacuation of dozens of families and the confinement of entire neighborhoods.

Residents in Torre Baró and Ciutat Meridiana have expressed concerns over the lack of effective forest maintenance and the accumulation of combustible vegetation. There are growing calls for better public education regarding emergency protocols, as many of the 15,000 local residents remain unfamiliar with specific evacuation routes or confinement procedures, which is particularly dangerous given the area's steep and narrow streets.

While the Collserola Natural Park Consortium utilizes a prevention system involving eight watchtowers and mobile patrols, experts and residents argue that structural changes are needed. Suggestions include restoring the agro-forest mosaic to create natural breaks in vegetation and implementing more robust forest management to mitigate the extreme vulnerability caused by climate change and urban encroachment.
