Collserola Natural Park forest fires

A series of forest fires in Collserola Natural Park has caused significant damage and prompted emergency responses in the Barcelona metropolitan area. An initial blaze on August 14 burned approximately 10 hectares in the Sant Pere Màrtir mountain area, leading to the detention of a person by the Barcelona Guàrdia Urbana. A second fire on August 25 in the Canyelles and Torre Baró zones affected an estimated 45 hectares, requiring the evacuation of roughly thirty families and the confinement of the Torre Baró and Ciutat Meridiana neighborhoods.

In total, approximately 65 hectares have burned within a twelve-day period. These recurring incidents have intensified public debate regarding wildfire prevention and management. Residents have expressed concerns over the accumulation of combustible vegetation and the lack of effective forest maintenance.

While the Collserola Natural Park Consortium utilizes a Fire Prevention Device involving eight watchtowers and mobile patrols, experts and locals argue for structural changes. Proposed measures include restoring the agro-forest mosaic to create natural breaks in vegetation and implementing more robust management to mitigate vulnerabilities caused by climate change and urban encroachment. Additionally, there are growing calls for better public education, as many of the 15,000 local residents remain unfamiliar with specific evacuation routes or confinement procedures, a situation made more dangerous by the area’s steep and narrow streets.
