Colniza, Brazil coffee farms hit record yields with Empaer assistance

Colniza, in Brazil's Mato Grosso state and dubbed the "Capital of Coffee," supplies more than half of the state's coffee output. The state government has invested over R$4.4 million through the Secretaria de Estado de Agricultura Familiar (Seaf) to provide machines, agricultural implements, clonal seedlings, irrigation kits and other support to family farms.

The Mato‑grosso State Research, Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Empaer) has offered continuous technical assistance. Farmer Edmar Mutz switched to clonal coffee in 2017 with guidance from Empaer agronomist Ronaldo Benevides. "In 2017 the average productivity was about 17 to 18 sacks per hectare. By 2019 this property reached more than 110 sacks per hectare," Benevides said, adding that some fields now produce around 205 sacks per hectare. The collaboration shows how public investment combined with research‑based extension can dramatically boost productivity and farm profitability.
