WWII bomb found in Cologne Rhine forces evacuations, TV studio move

On the evening of 5 August 2026 a 250‑kg American World War II bomb was discovered about 50 cm below the water surface of the Rhine near the Rheinpark in the Cologne‑Deutz district. Low water levels exposed the ordnance, which had been hidden for decades.

Authorities established a 400‑metre safety perimeter, evacuating roughly 360‑400 people, including residents of a nearby nursing home and staff of the RTL and ntv broadcasting centres. The evacuation forced RTL Aktuell to broadcast from its Berlin studio and ntv to operate from a mobile studio at the Hyatt hotel in Cologne. Regional rail services between Oberhausen‑Sterkrade and Dinslaken were partially suspended, causing delays and cancellations on several RE lines. The bomb was safely defused on 6 August 2026. The incident highlights the ongoing risk of unexploded WWII munitions uncovered by the Rhine’s unusually low water level.
