Germany WWII bomb disposal continues

Overview

In early August 2026, German explosive-ordnance teams intensified a nationwide sweep for unexploded World War II munitions. Notably, unusually low water levels in German rivers have led to several discoveries. In Cologne-Deutz, a 250-kg American bomb was found 50 cm below the Rhine surface near the Rheinpark on 5 August; it was safely defused on 6 August after a 400-metre safety perimeter forced the evacuation of approximately 360-400 people, including a nursing home and RTL and ntv broadcasting staff. The incident also caused partial suspensions of regional rail services on the Oberhausen-Sterkrade–Dinslaken line. Extreme low water levels in the Rhine have continued to expose hazardous materials and historical artifacts across Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf. Beyond waste such as tires and leaking oil barrels, authorities have identified an American 500-kg bomb in Cologne, a German water bomb near Niederkassel, and anti-aircraft shell remnants near the Theodor-Heuss Bridge in Düsseldorf. Environmental groups, including Rhein-Clean-Up, are organizing efforts to manage debris, such as around the “Aalschocker” shipwreck near Dormagen-Zons, which lies exposed on the riverbed. The low water has also revealed significant consumer waste, including bicycles and e-scooters. In Koblenz, authorities have since completed controlled detonations of ordnance found near the Rhine. Following the discovery of a WWII-era American Bazooka rocket in the Wallersheim district, the Rhineland-Palatinate Ordnance Disposal Service moved the item into the water to facilitate detonation. This operation required the temporary closure of the Rhine and surrounding airspace, as well as the evacuation of twelve apartment buildings. A second operation followed the discovery of a rifle grenade on the riverbank in the Pfaffendorf district, which necessitated the evacuation of fifteen apartment buildings. Both detonations were completed without significant complications.
