Cologne faces criticism over deportation handling and Coesfeld List

The City of Cologne is facing criticism from regional leaders regarding its handling of individuals required to leave the country. Following discussions with North Rhine-Westphalia's Migration Minister Verena Schäffer, district administrators in the state are calling for more consistent deportations and improved controls.

A central point of contention is the ‘Coesfeld List,’ which identifies 1,573 individuals from Western Balkan states who lack travel documents or have unclarified identities. Olaf Gericke, President of the NRW District Association, emphasized that criminals subject to deportation must be returned to uphold the law.

Reports indicate that in 2024, the Central Foreigners Authority (ZAB) in Coesfeld offered to help the Cologne foreigners' office secure necessary travel documents for 471 people, but the city administration reportedly declined the assistance. Cologne City Director Dörte Diemert acknowledged communication deficits within the department but denied any intentional refusal to act.
