Cologne immigration dispute sparks federal pressure over deportation enforcement
German federal politicians are increasing pressure on the City of Cologne following allegations that local authorities have systematically obstructed the deportation of individuals required to leave the country.
Detlef Seif, a CDU politician, accused the Cologne immigration office of "flagrantly disregarding federal statutory requirements" and suggested that repatriations should be further centralized. FDP leader Wolfgang Kubicki characterized the situation as a "unconstitutional administrative practice," warning that if local authorities can ignore legislative decisions without consequence, it could signify the "end of the separation of powers in the rule of law."
The controversy stems from an incident in November 2024, when the Central Immigration Office in Coesfeld offered to assist Cologne in procuring travel documents for approximately 500 individuals from West Balkan states to facilitate their return. The City of Cologne reportedly rejected this assistance, opting instead to focus on providing a permanent perspective for residency.
