Cologne Opera reopens after 14-year, 800 million euro renovation
The renovation of the Cologne Opera has concluded after 14 years, but the project faces scrutiny regarding its final costs and technical readiness. The total construction costs reached approximately 800 million euros, a significant increase from the initial 250 million euro estimate and the 2015 projected reopening date.
Reports indicate that the venue is experiencing mechanical and software issues just days before its scheduled premiere of ‘Rosenkavalier’. While these technical difficulties have led to changes in the production, a spokesperson for the city stated that such adjustments are realistic for a project of this scale and that the premiere will proceed as planned.
Musician Stephan Brings has expressed mixed emotions regarding the reopening. While welcoming the return of the venue, he criticized the high costs and the tendency to frame the opera house as a vital ‘fortress of freedom’ while simultaneously implementing budget cuts in education, sports, and independent cultural sectors.
