Cologne Opera renovation and reopening

Overview

The Cologne Opera and Schauspielhaus have officially reopened at Offenbachplatz following a 14-year renovation and expansion project. The project, which began in 2012, significantly exceeded its original scope; the timeline extended from an intended three years to 14, and total costs rose from an initial estimate of approximately 253 million euros to roughly 1.5 billion euros in taxpayer funds.

The modernization included the addition of two new venues: a children’s opera house and a ‘Kleines Haus’. During the reopening, Cologne Mayor Torsten Burmester apologized to the public for the delays and errors encountered during the process. Carsten Brosda, President of the German Stage Association, defended the project by highlighting that theaters provide “essential stories and perspectives necessary for a democratic society.”

The reopening premiere featured Richard Strauss’s ‘Der Rosenkavalier’. While the performance received enthusiastic applause for the singers and the Gürzenich Orchestra, led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, due to the building’s improved acoustics, the production directed by Marie-Ève Signeyrole faced significant backlash, resulting in loud boos from the audience. Despite the controversy surrounding the direction and the massive expenditure, the premiere was a sold-out event.
