Cologne Opera reopens after 14-year renovation
The Cologne Opera and Schauspielhaus have officially reopened following a 14-year renovation and expansion project. The historic building ensemble, located at Offenbachplatz, underwent extensive technical modernization and was expanded to include two new venues: a children's opera house and a 'Kleines Haus'.
The project, which began in 2012, faced significant challenges. Originally intended to take three years, the timeline extended to 14 years, and construction costs rose from an initial estimate of 253 million euros to approximately 800 million euros. These costs also included interest payments and the operation of interim venues.
During the reopening ceremony, Cologne Mayor Torsten Burmester apologized to citizens for the long delays and errors throughout the renovation process. Carsten Brosda, President of the German Stage Association, highlighted the importance of cultural buildings, stating that theaters provide essential stories and perspectives necessary for a democratic society.
