Cologne Opera reopens after 14-year renovation
The Cologne Opera has officially reopened its house at Offenbachplatz following a 14-year renovation period that cost approximately 1.5 billion euros in taxpayer funds. The reopening premiere featured Richard Strauss’s ‘Der Rosenkavalier,’ a choice by Intendant Hein Mulders that drew mixed reactions from critics regarding its artistic ambition.
The performance received enthusiastic applause for the singers and the Gürzenich Orchestra, led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, who benefited from the building's improved acoustics. However, the production directed by Marie-Ève Signeyrole faced significant backlash, resulting in loud boos from the audience.
While the renovation addressed technical issues and updated the foyers and seating, the project was marked by long delays and rising costs. Despite the controversy surrounding the direction and the massive expenditure, the premiere was a sold-out event attended by a festive crowd.
