Cologne's Kölner Lichter 2026 fireworks expected to draw tens of thousands
On Saturday, 1 August 2026, Cologne will host the 21st edition of the Kölner Lichter fireworks festival. Organisers expect tens of thousands of spectators along the Rhine waterfront. For the first time this year a drone show will precede the music‑synchronized fireworks at around 23:00.
Low water levels in the Rhine have forced a reduction of the traditional ship convoy. Some excursion vessels cannot join because of excessive draft, and the convoy will start in the Niehl district instead of the usual route from Porz, proceeding to the Hohenzollern Bridge.
The Cologne main station and the Köln Messe/Deutz station are declared weapons‑free zones until Sunday, prohibiting firearms, knives and other dangerous items. The Bundespolizei has issued a general order to enforce this ban.
To manage the large crowds, the Kölner Verkehrs‑Betriebe (KVB) and regional partners have expanded train and bus services, introduced special routes, and warned of extensive road closures and traffic restrictions on both riverbanks. Public transport tickets, including the Deutschlandticket, remain valid for all services.
