Cologne Hohenzollern Bridge transport disruptions

In late June 2026 a fire on Cologne’s Hohenzollern Bridge forced an immediate halt to train traffic, underscoring the bridge’s pivotal role in the city’s rail network and the need for rapid emergency response.

For the annual Kölner Lichter fireworks display on 1 August 2026, authorities released a detailed transport plan. The bridge’s south side was scheduled to close from 20:00 and the north side from 16:00, with diversions to alternative KVB lines and a temporary truck‑ban on nearby streets to manage the expected surge of visitors.

On the event day, organisers projected tens of thousands of spectators along the Rhine waterfront and introduced a drone show preceding the music‑synchronized fireworks. Low Rhine water levels reduced the traditional ship convoy, which now began in the Niehl district and proceeded to the bridge.

The Cologne main station and Köln Messe/Deutz station were declared weapons‑free zones, with the Bundespolizei enforcing the ban. To accommodate crowds, KVB and regional partners expanded train and bus services, added special routes, and warned of extensive road closures and traffic restrictions on both riverbanks. Public‑transport tickets, including the Deutschlandticket, remained valid for all services.
